چکیده

Seeking to locate changes in longevity in hominin evolution, Caspari and Lee (2004) calculated a ratio of old to young adult dentitions in assemblages of fossil taxa. They found an especially large difference in this ratio between Neandertals and Upper Paleolithic modern humans. While the important question they addressed can only be answered with fossil evidence, their ratio, as we show here, is not a measure of longevity. If their age categorizations are correct, the ratios do show very different representations of the deaths of old and young adults in the assemblages analyzed. Instead of changes in longevity, these differences more likely reflect biases in the ages at death represented in the assemblages. Caspari and Lee (2004: 10895) say: ‘‘Increased longevity, expressed as a number of individuals surviving to older adulthood, represents one of the ways the human life history pattern differs from other primates.’’ Using an analysis of tooth wear to classify fossil dentitions as young or old adults, they concluded that the longevity characteristic of modern humans first appeared in the late Pleistocene and contributed significantly to

Continuous Swimming Training Arises a Remarkable Effect on Some Longevity Biomarkers in Rat Skeletal Muscles

Background. SIRT3 is one of the members of the Sirtuin deacetylase protein family which is linked to the longevity of human being and is used as an important therapeutic and diagnostic marker in illness and aging. Objectives. The aim of this study was studying the effect of continuous swimming training on some biomarkers of longevity in slowtwitch (SOL) and fast-twitch (EDL) muscles of adult m...

Psychological Consequences of Longevity The Increasing Importance of Self-Regulation in Old Age

How do changes in life expectancy and longevity affect life-span development? This paper argues that historical increases in life expectancy primarily have an impact on the later and less on the earlier parts of the life span. Increased life expectancy is both a challenge and an opportunity for positive development. A perspective is outlined according to which self-regulation is a key factor fo...

The reduction of vascular disease risk mutations contributes to longevity in the Chinese population

AIM Genetic factors play important roles in determining human lifespan. Although some "longevity genes" have been identified to be implicated in human longevity, many disease-associated variants were also observed in the long-lived individuals. The oldest old and their offspring usually have a lower prevalence of age-related diseases, which is likely attributed to a reduction or an absence of d...

Why human lifespan is rapidly increasing: solving "longevity riddle" with "revealed-slow-aging" hypothesis

Healthy life span is rapidly increasing and human aging seems to be postponed. As recently exclaimed in Nature, these findings are so perplexing that they can be dubbed the 'longevity riddle'. To explain current increase in longevity, I discuss that certain genetic variants such as hyper-active mTOR (mTarget of Rapamycin) may increase survival early in life at the expense of accelerated aging. ...

Psychosocial Factors Associated with Longevity in the United States: Age Differences between the Old and Oldest-Old in the Health and Retirement Study

Recent growth in the number of adults surviving to advanced ages raises questions about the quality of life associated with increased longevity. Psychosocial factors have received relatively little attention in research on quality of life among the oldest-old. This study uses nationally representative data on older US adults to examine how social relationships, feelings of loneliness, and satis...
